LIFEGUARD PRE & IN-SERVICE TRAINING

A one-day pre-service/in-service Lifeguard Training Program which includes a 2.5 hour classroom session and a 3.5 hour in-water practical session.

The classroom session focuses on the Standard of Care in the Prevention, Recognition and Management of drowning and aquatic injuries and includes information on:

  • Physiology of Drowning
  • Risk Management and Incident Prevention
  • Legal Liability and Risk Factors
  • Aquatic Facility and Lifeguard Operations
  • Prevention and Management of Aquatic Spinal Injuries

The practical session focuses on critical lifesaving and water rescue skills and information, including a review of all facility rescue and safety and equipment with practical evolutions conducted in the following areas:

  • Emergency Resuscitation Protocols
  • Management of Aquatic Spinal Injuries
  • Emergency Communications and Emergency Response Plans

Finally, whenever feasible, an Emergency Response Drill is coordinated with the local Fire, Rescue and EMS Services which allows the community Public Safety and Rescue organizations the opportunity to work with the Lifeguard team and vice versa during a simulated emergency incident.

Course Instructor

The curriculum has been developed by and is presented by Gerald Dworkin, a professional Aquatics Safety and Water Rescue Consultant for Lifesaving Resources.  Dworkin has authored numerous articles which have appeared in such publications as Advanced Rescue Technology; Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS); Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Magazine; Parks and Recreation Magazine; and Aquatics International.  Besides the Water Rescue Course Guidebook, Dworkin has also published the Ice Rescue Course Guidebook, The Lifeguard Competition Guidebook, and CPR for Infants and Children (published by the Child Welfare League of America).

Dworkin has an extensive background in Aquatics, Water Rescue, EMS, and Firefighting, and regularly consults as an Expert in drowning and aquatic injury litigation.  Dworkin is considered an expert and qualified educator in the field of Aquatics Safety, Water Rescue, and Ice Rescue throughout the country.
