2008 Water Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy (Keene, NH)

The Water Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy is a comprehensive and intensive training program designed to train and authorize designated representatives of Fire, Rescue, EMS, and Law Enforcement agencies as Water Rescue Instructors on behalf of Lifesaving Resources and their Authorized Provider Agency. Upon successful completion of this weekend training program, Instructors will be authorized to conduct Water Rescue Awareness, Operations, and/or Technician level courses on behalf of their own Public Safety and/or Rescue agency. The Water Rescue Instructor Candidate must have the endorsement of their department/agency Chief or Training Officer to participate in the weekend. The Candidate must be in good physical condition and able to pass a pre-requisite swim test consisting of: (A) swim 100 yards while wearing a PFD; (B) while in deep water, must remove his/her PFD, then surface dive to a depth of 9', and recover a 10 lbs. brick and swim it to the surface; (C) support a 10 lbs. brick at the surface of the water, using legs only, for 1 minute; and (D) surface dive and swim a distance of 35' underwater. The program will begin on Thursday at 19:00 hrs. and will continue through Sunday at 15:00 hrs. The fee includes lodging on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. The fee also includes all books and materials required to participate in the Academy program. Instructor Candidates will be required to sign an Instructor Agreement and their department/agency will be required to complete an Authorized Provider Agreement. Once registration is received, a confirmation packet will be sent to the Instructor Candidate with this information, as well as further details about the training weekend. July 17 - 20, 2008 at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire.

Water Rescue Technician (WRT) Courses
A comprehensive 8-hour training program designed specifically for Public Safety and Rescue personnel (i.e. Law Enforcement, Fire, Rescue, EMS, Lifeguard). This course focuses on the prevention, recognition and management of drowning and aquatic injuries and includes a 3.5-hour classroom session, followed by a 4.5 hour in-water practical session. Subjects and/or practical evolutions include: • Physiology/Mechanisms of Drowning • Types and Uses of PFDs • Threat Analysis and Pre-Incident Planning • Incident Command • Cold Water Rescue & Survival • Ice Rescue & Survival • Swiftwater Rescue & Survival • Management of Aquatic Spinal Injuries • Shore-Based Non-Swimming Rescues • Basic Swimming Rescues • Personal Survival Procedures. Each participant receives a comprehensive course guidebook, and upon successful completion of the course a course completion certificate and insignia. Note: 8-hours of continuing education units are awarded by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for completion of this training course.

This course will be conducted as part of the North Country EMS Conference at the Attitash Resort in Bartlett, New Hampshire, from 08:00 - 17:30 hrs. The practical session will be conducted in a heated outdoor swimming pool. Participants are encouraged to wear a full wetsuit and booties during the practical session. Wetsuits can be rented through most SCUBA shops if you don't have your own. In lieu of a wetsuit and booties, participants may wear long pants and T-shirt and tennis shoes.

The Professional Aquatics Safety Seminar (PASS) if often referred to as "The Scared Straight of Aquatics". During this comprehensive 8-hour classroom-formatted seminar, participants see an array of videoclips either showing drowning and/or aquatic injury incidents in the making, or news stories about the incidents. PASS is designed specifically for Aquatic and Recreation Professionals; Lifeguard Instructors and Supervisors; Aquatic Facility Managers and Operators; and Lifeguard, Public Safety and Rescue Personnel. The purpose of this intensive 3-day training program is to train and authorize designated representatives of Parks and Recreation Departments, American Red Cross Chapters, YMCAs, and other aquatic organizations as PASM Instructors. These comprehensive one-day and fast-paced courses are designed to meet the NFPA 1670 Standard for Technical Rescue operations. Courses are conducted from 08:00 - 17:30 hrs. Participants must supply their own cold water/ice rescue suit, but rental suits are available. Courses will be conducted in either Harrisville or Hancock, New Hampshire. Upon receipt of registration and payment information, a confirmation packet will be sent that includes directions and further information. Lunch and snacks are provided as part of the course tuition.

2009 Ice Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy in Hancock, New Hampshire

Thursday, February 19 - Sunday, February 22. An intensive weekend training program designed to train and authorize select representatives from Fire, Rescue, EMS, and Law Enforcement agencies as Ice Rescue Instructors. Upon completion of this program, instructors will be authorized to conduct Ice Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician-level courses for members of their own Public Safety and Rescue agencies. This weekend program will be conducted at Boston University's Sargent Center for Outdoor Education in Hancock, New Hampshire. The program starts at 19:00 hrs. on Thursday, February 19 and continues through 15:00 hrs. on Sunday, February 22. Tuition includes Thursday, Friday and Saturday lodging, as well as three meals on Friday (breakfast, lunch and dinner), three meals on Saturday (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and two meals on Sunday (breakfast and lunch). Tuition also includes all books and materials. Instructor candidates must be in good physical condition and must be designated and approved to participate in this training by their department/agency chief or training officer. Upon receipt of registration and payment, a confirmation packet will be sent to the instructor candidate that contains directions and additional information, including local motel information for participants requiring lodging after the conclusion of the training weekend.

Swiftwater Rescue Course
This 2-day, 16-hour course is designed specifically for Public Safety and Rescue personnel and provides the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to incidents in and around moving water. This 2-day program includes the Water Rescue Technician Course (day 1) conducted in a static water environment, and the Swiftwater Rescue Module (day 2) conducted in a moving water environment. Course candidates who have participated and completed a WRT course within the previous 3-years may participate in the 2nd day of training only. All candidates must demonstrate their in-water skills proficiency by passing a prerequisite swim test prior to participating in this training program. The candidate must be able to swim 100 yards while wearing a PFD; while in deep water, the SRM candidate must remove his/her PFD, surface dive to a depth of 9', and recover a 10 lbs. brick and recover it to the surface; support a 10 lbs. brick at the surface of the water, using legs only, for 1 minute; and surface dive and swim a distance of 35' underwater. The candidate must provide his/her own wetsuit or drysuit, wetsuit booties or tennis shoes, and water gloves. PFDs and helmets will be provided by Lifesaving Resources. Candidates are also encouraged to bring their own swim fins as well.
