Rapid Intervention for Surf Rescue Training Program

This fast-paced and intensive 3-hour training program is designed to provide First Responders with the basic rapid intervention surf rescue skills required to respond to an open water incident when lifeguards are off duty.

It is a free 3-hour training program sponsored by and conducted by Lifesaving Resources in cooperation with Kennebunk Fire Rescue.

Requirements and Equipment

Those participating as Rescue Swimmers must be in good physical condition and competent swimmers. Rescue Swimmers must wear
a wetsuit or swiftwater rescue dry suit, appropriate footgear (wetsuit booties, water shoes, or tennis shoes), and lightweight gloves.

Those participating as Line Tenders must be prepared to get wet in water up to their chests. Line Tenders must wear appropriate footgear (wetsuit booties, water shoes, or tennis shoes) and lightweight gloves.

Type V Rescue PFDs and Helmets will be provided, or participants may bring their own. Rescue Swimmers are welcome to provide their own swim fins as well.

Curriculum

Curriculum & Practical Skill Evolutions will include:

  • Management of shore-based lines
  • Donning and use of Type V Rescue PFDs
  • Self-Rescue from Rip Currents
  • Rip Current Rescue
  • Rescue Swimmer with tethered Type V PFD
  • Single Rescue Swimmer with tethered Rescue Buoy
  • Team Rescue Swimmers with tethered Rescue Buoy
  • Management of Aquatic Spinal Injured Patient in the Surf
  • Jetty Entry & Jetty Rescues

 

This training is offered free-of-charge, but participants are encouraged to pre-register.
